What is the eLearning CoRe Projects Pilot Program?

The eLearning Course Redesign (CoRe) Projects Pilot Program is a call for proposals for significant course (re)design and multimedia projects.

What is the purpose?

The CoRe Projects concept moves the eLearning process from a piecemeal approach to a whole-course method, following standards that reflect current academic research on effective learning. We are testing this process to see if it will help eLearning to better use resources to support faculty in meeting the current critical needs to enhance student success, facilitate semester conversion, and respond to increasing demands for universally accessible instruction.

We envision that the CoRe approach will lead to courses that show improved learning because of greater student engagement, lower repeatable grade rates, better accessibility for all students, and more satisfaction for faculty teaching.

We are trying this for the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year and will evaluate the process to see if we want to continue.

For basic instructional design consultations that do not require significant course redesign or multimedia learning objects, eLearning continues to support our traditional project requests.

All CPP faculty, tenure line and lecturer, with interest in collaboration with eLearning are invited to submit an eLearning CoRe Project proposal. Priority is given to courses that meet one or more of the following, as identified by the department itself (i.e. if the department is concerned about the course, then it’s of concern):

  • High repeatable grade (D's, F's, and unauthorized withdrawals) rate
  • High demand
  • Significant or persistent achievement gaps

If your project is selected, for the duration of the project you will have:

  • A designated instructional designer to work closely with you
  • A designated student technology assistant, managed by eLearning staff, to spend up to 3 hrs per week on the "grunt" work of your project (e.g. putting items that you provide into a well-formatted Blackboard shell)
  • Other campus resources drawn in as necessary (e.g. eLearning facilitates connecting with MediaVision for video-recording)

At the end, your course will:

  • Be universally designed and accessible
  • Be adaptable to different teaching modalities (e.g., changing from face to face to hybrid or online, with additional development)
  • Reflect standards based on current research on effective teaching
  • If indicated by project needs, have one or more customized multimedia learning objects
  • Be semester-ready

For the benefit of your future courses, you will:

  • Learn a replicable course design process that is based on current research on effective teaching
  • Learn how to make instructional materials accessible
  • Learn about the wide variety of resources on campus and how to access them

Time commitment on the regular! You are the subject matter expert. We cannot do anything with your course without your close involvement. We will ask you to schedule a regular weekly one-hour meeting with us (cancelled by mutual agreement if not needed due to the project status or in serious crunch times) so that we can continue progress. If you no-show or cancel a needed meeting without an immediate reschedule 3 times, except for emergencies, we will have to drop your project. In addition, we ask that you calendar enough time on your own to do the necessary improvement work as the subject matter expert.

  • September 9, 2017: Proposal deadline
  • September 15, 2017: Extended Proposal deadline
  • On or before October 16, 2017: Selected CoRe projects announced

The number of projects accepted will depend upon the anticipated scope of the selected proposed projects.
